 Damage resistance
« Thread Started on Aug 29, 2009, 7:36am »

Scenario:
(joe has a magic frost blade sword)
(Monster is immune to cold damage)

Joe: "6 magic cold!"
Monster: "Immune"

Even though magic would effect the monster hes immune to part of the damage so hes immune to all.

Next scenario:

(Joe is a dwarf with poison resistance)
(trap has multiple types of poison. Sleep, berserk, vertigo)

Trap goes off
Joe: "resist!"

He resists all of the different types but only uses 1 of his resists

Senario 3:

(Bill is a biata and has a resist sleep)
(same trap joe found but reset)

Trap goes off
Bill: "resist sleep!"

Now hes vertigo and berserk.

Given scenario 1 and 2 doesnt this seem like a contradiction?

NERO is a wonderful world of contradictions, half-truths, and generality.

The only way I can try to explain it is that with the Poison and Weapon examples, they are immune or resist the general effect. Since they are immune to Ice, and you hit them with MAGIC Ice... it's still an ice effect. Even though it's technically Magic... in general it's still ice.

With the poisons, I've always hated the rule that one resist poison resists all the poisons in a trap. But again, it's a general thing. You have Resist POISON. So since it's all poison (no matter what kind) you can resist it all.

But with a Biata, and Resist Sleep. That is a specific resistance, not a general one. It's kind of like a different category. There's general resists (like poison, where it's anything with the word "poison" in it) and specific resists, such as sleep, where it's anything with the word: "sleep" in it. Arcane sleep, magic sleep, sleep gas poison, they're all resisted.

So think of them as two different kinds of categories of resists, general and specific.

Hope that helps,
Alex D
